What it is

How the treatment works

This is a medical procedure in which your blood passes through a closed circuit, crosses a membrane with extremely fine pores, and returns to your body. This membrane selectively retains substances circulating in the plasma that are associated with inflammation and toxic load, including microplastics.

It's the most demanding treatment we offer, and also the one that most often brings patients to travel to Porto.

Who it's for

Situations where it usually helps

This treatment usually makes sense in the following situations:

Chronic inflammatory conditions that haven't responded to other approaches High toxic load, documented in lab tests Certain selected clinical situations, always after evaluation Longevity programmes for people already studied in depth
This treatment is never a starting point. • It's always preceded by a consultation and lab tests that justify the indication. •
What happens during the session

What to expect on the day

It's a procedure with permanent medical supervision, lasting several hours. You lie down comfortably, with venous access in both arms. You can read, listen to music or sleep. The nursing team is with you from start to finish, with regular checks throughout the procedure.

Given its duration and the preparation required, apheresis is scheduled in advance and, for international patients, is usually the treatment around which the whole stay is organised.

How many sessions

How many sessions, and how far apart

It varies a lot. There are single-session cases and cases where it makes sense to repeat with an interval of weeks or months. The decision is based on your before-and-after markers.

Afterwards

After the session

  • It's normal to feel tired and need to rest for the rest of the day.
  • We recommend not driving afterwards.
  • Avoid scheduling demanding commitments for that day.
  • Most people resume normal activity the following day.
Frequently asked questions

No. Dialysis replaces kidney function in people who have lost it. Here the goal is different: to selectively remove substances associated with inflammation and toxic load from the plasma.

We usually count on three to four days, to allow for the consultation, lab tests, the procedure and the follow-up. This is defined during the prior teleconsultation.

We recommend it, especially if you're travelling from abroad.
